The AMA ESD proudly announces the completion of its ADA Playground Initiative.

In 2023, Phase I installation was completed at Alcona, Hillman, and Atlanta elementary schools. This summer, Phase II installations were completed at each of the six Alpena Public School elementary playgrounds. In total, nine playgrounds across the AMA three-county region are now equipped with adaptive equipment. This milestone marks a significant step forward in creating accessible outdoor spaces for children of all abilities.

Elementary school playgrounds serve as central outdoor learning and play spaces for children within each neighborhood community. These playgrounds provide opportunities for children to practice collaborating with peers, develop decision-making skills, build social and imaginative skills, and cultivate healthy friendships.  When these areas lack the necessary adaptive equipment for students with disabilities, those students with the greatest need for inclusive opportunities are left out. Recognizing this gap, the AMA ESD launched the ADA Playground Initiative to ensure that every child can benefit from these essential spaces.

AMA ESD Superintendent Justin Gluesing reflected on the project’s completion.

"The completion of Phase II of our ADA Playground Initiative is a time to celebrate,” Gluesing said. “Ensuring that all children, regardless of ability, have access to these spaces is a priority for the AMA ESD and the local school districts we serve."

The total project cost for Phase I and Phase II was just over $200,000 and the project would not have been possible without the support of the following donors.

  • Besser Foundation

  • First Federal Legacy Foundation

  • The Alpena County Youth and Recreation Fund (APS Sites)

  • Alpena Alcona Area Credit Union

  • The Community Foundation of NE Michigan

  • Dean Transportation

  • Alpena Rotary

  • United Way of NE Michigan

“This project is just the beginning,” Gluesing added. “Efforts to enhance playground accessibility must continue throughout our region. When selecting new equipment, schools and communities should prioritize ADA accessibility to ensure that all children and families can enjoy these important spaces.”
