After weeks of dry, mild winter weather, the Alpena-Montmorency-Alcona Educational Service District (AMA ESD) received its first significant snowfall of the season, prompting the cancellation of classes for all member schools on Wednesday, January 10th. The decision was announced Tuesday evening, much to the delight of students and staff.
“We want to make sure our students and staff stay safe during inclement weather,” said AMA ESD Superintendent Justin Gluesing. “With the forecast predicting hazardous road conditions, we felt it was in everyone's best interest to err on the side of caution and cancel school for the day.”
The snowfall, which began Tuesday afternoon, continued into the evening, blanketing the region and most of the northern lower peninsula. By Wednesday morning, many areas had received up to six inches of snow, with some reporting even higher totals.
